The “Enigma” mushroom is one of the most famous, potent, and bizarre mutations in the history of mycology. It is not a standard strain of Psilocybe cubensis, but rather a specific genetic monstrosity that grows into coral-like blobs instead of normal caps and stems.
Origin and Genetics
The Mutation: Enigma is a stable blob mutation that originally arose from a cross between the Tidal Wave strain (which itself is a hybrid of B+ and Penis Envy).
Sterile Nature: Enigma is completely sterile. It does not produce gills, veils, or spores. Because it cannot produce spores, it cannot be grown from a spore syringe or swab.
Propagation: It can only be preserved and passed down through living tissue clones via agar cultures or liquid culture syringes. [1]
Physical Characteristics
Appearance: Instead of normal mushrooms, Enigma grows in dense, tightly packed, brain-like or coral-like clusters. It looks like cauliflower or sea coral.
Color: It starts out stark white or cream-colored. As it matures, it develops a distinct, beautiful blue-green tint across its ridges.
Texture: Unlike standard hollow-stemmed mushrooms, Enigma blobs are incredibly dense, solid, and rubbery to the touch. [1, 2]
Cultivation Profile
Substrate: It grows exceptionally well on standard bulk substrates like coco coir and vermiculite (CVG). [1]
Fruiting Time: Extremely slow. While a normal mushroom takes 1 to 2 weeks to fruit, Enigma can take 4 to 8 weeks (or more) to fully mature after pinning.
Harvest Window: Because there are no caps to open or veils to tear, growers know it is ready to harvest when the entire blob softens slightly (like a marshmallow) and the blueing color intensifies. [1]
Yield: While it takes a long time, the final yields are often massive by weight because the clusters are completely solid flesh.
Potency
Strength: Enigma is widely considered one of the most potent mutations in existence, consistently testing at the top of psilocybin cup competitions.
Alkaloid Content: Its slow growth cycle allows it to concentrate exceptionally high levels of psilocybin, psilocin, and secondary alkaloids.
Experience: Users report an incredibly intense, rapid onset with powerful visuals and a heavy body load. It is generally not recommended for beginners.
